Standard Oil added ethanol to gasoline to increase octane and reduce knocking.

Convinced that renewable resources were the key to the success of his automobiles, Henry Ford built an ethanol plant in the Midwest, partnering with Standard Oil to sell the fuel. In the 1920s, ethanol accounted for 25% of Standard’s sales in the Baltimore, MD, region.
