Racing with Ethanol
If ethanol can propel a 650-horsepower IndyCar® around the oval at speeds topping 220 mph, just think what it can do for your car’s performance!
That’s the message ICM is promoting through its support and sponsorship of ethanol-powered racing.
The clean-burning, renewable fuel is a growing component of the U.S. gasoline supply, reducing emissions and improving air quality while delivering improved vehicle performance to consumers.

IndyCar® Series Racing
Recognizing the performance and environmental benefits offered by ethanol, the IndyCar® Series switched from methanol to 10% ethanol in 2006, and 100% ethanol in 2007. Quickly following suit, the American Le Mans Series began using a 10% blend of ethanol (E10) in 2007.
Formula SAE Racing
Iowa State University (ISU) Race Team
The Iowa State University (ISU) race team is composed of future engineers who want to learn about cutting-edge technologies while designing a high-performance racecar. Sponsored by ICM, Inc., the ISU team designs, builds, tests, and races a formula-style car in the annual Formula SAE Series Championship held in Romeo, MI.
In Memory
It is with great respect and deep sadness, that ICM, Inc., honors the memory of two young men who shared a passion for racing, especially for racing with ethanol. Champions of ethanol and friends to the ethanol industry, racecar drivers Paul Dana and Steve King each saw the benefit of racing with clean, renewable ethanol, and both of these men shared their message with everyone who would listen. Their friendship and contributions to our industry will not be forgotten.
Paul Dana
Paul Dana was a tireless advocate for the ethanol industry. In fact, according to ICM President and CEO, Dave Vander Griend, Paul was the primary person responsible for convincing the Indy Racing League to switch their fuel — from methanol to ethanol. He believed that the performance benefits of ethanol were demonstrated unquestionably through racetrack performance.
Paul was fatally injured in an IndyCar accident during a March 2006 practice session. He was known for his persistence, determination, and full-throttle attitude. His website sums up his relentless spirit in one simple phrase, "Wide open ’til you see God."
Steve King
A lifelong and fourth-generation Kansas farmer, Steve King was a two-time championship-winning sprint car racer who supported and promoted the use of ethanol, both on and off the dirt track. He understood that ethanol, a domestic, renewable fuel, keeps prosperity at home while offering security.
He was able to combine his love for racing and farming when he joined Team Ethanol in 2005. Steve was living his dream as a successful sprint-car driver when a tragic racing accident at the Knoxville Nationals in Knoxville, IA, claimed his life. He was second in NCRA championship series points at the time and had just hours earlier set a track record at Knoxville.
In celebration of his life, Steve’s family has established the Steve King Foundation to help those in the extended family of dirt-track racing who have been injured.
